Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in New Zealand offers the AUT Doctoral Scholarship for outstanding students and researchers who wish to pursue a doctoral degree and conduct advanced research at the university.

The scholarship is one of the leading funded scholarships in New Zealand available to international students. It provides an annual stipend of NZD 34,737 for 2026, in addition to coverage of tuition fees at the domestic rate and compulsory student services fees, for up to three years for full-time doctoral students.

The scholarship is open to international students from outside New Zealand, including students from Arab countries, provided they meet the admission requirements for the doctoral program and obtain an Offer of Place from AUT before submitting their scholarship application.

Benefits

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  • Meet the admission requirements for a doctoral program at AUT.
  • Hold a conditional or unconditional Offer of Place before applying for the scholarship.
  • Meet the English language requirements for doctoral study.
  • Have an outstanding academic record.
  • Demonstrate strong research capability.
  • Normally have an academic standard equivalent to First-Class Honours.
  • Have completed prior study that included training in research methodologies.
  • Have completed an independent research project as part of a previous qualification.
  • Choose a research topic for which the university can provide suitable academic supervision.
  • Contact a potential academic supervisor before submitting the application.
  • Provide strong academic references.

Required Documents

Applicants should prepare:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates.
  • A copy of the Offer of Place from AUT.
  • A CV of no more than 3 pages.
  • A Research Proposal of no more than 2 pages or approximately 1,000 words, excluding references.
  • The title and topic of the proposed research.
  • An explanation of the significance and rationale of the proposed study.
  • The proposed research question or problem.
  • A description of the research methodology and methods.
  • An explanation of the expected benefits or outcomes of the research.
  • Details of two academic referees if the applicant did not complete their previous qualification at AUT.
  • Evidence of support from an academic supervisor or AUT faculty, where required.
