The Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies, with support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, have opened applications for the first cohort of the NNF-IAS Fellowship Programme on Health and Sustainability, a fully funded international postdoctoral fellowship programme.
In its first cycle, the programme offers 5 research fellowships lasting 23 months, beginning on September 1, 2027 and continuing until July 2029. Fellows will be hosted at one of four leading institutes in Denmark, Finland, Norway, or Sweden.
The current cycle focuses on the theme “Inequity in Health”. Applications are open to projects from all academic disciplines, not only medical and health-related fields, provided that the proposed research is connected to understanding health inequalities or the relationship between health, the environment, and sustainability.
Possible research topics may include the social and structural determinants of health inequality, health innovations and technologies, equality of opportunity, and health challenges resulting from environmental developments.

Eligibility criteria
Researchers may apply for the fellowship if they meet the following requirements:
- Be of any nationality; the programme is open to researchers from around the world.
- Applicants from all academic disciplines are eligible, provided that their proposed project is relevant to the theme of the call.
- Hold a PhD degree.
- Have between 2 and 10 years of professional and research experience after completing the PhD. The PhD study period itself is not counted toward the required years of experience.
- Meet the international mobility requirement, meaning the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity, such as employment, in the country of their first-choice host institute for more than 12 months during the two years preceding the application deadline.
- Be willing to reside in the host institute’s country for the entire fellowship period.
- Be prepared to participate in an interdisciplinary research project and collaborate with other researchers in the cohort.
- Be able and willing to take part in joint meetings and activities organized across the Nordic institutes.
