Monash University Malaysia offers the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) to outstanding students from Malaysia and around the world who wish to pursue a full-time PhD degree.
This opportunity is considered one of the leading fully funded PhD scholarships in Malaysia. It combines a full tuition fee waiver, a monthly stipend, and support for travel and visa expenses. Scholars also have the opportunity to spend up to nine months at Monash University in Australia or Indonesia, or at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
The university offers 15 scholarships each year. The available research projects address global challenges in fields such as engineering, information technology, science, pharmacy, health, and climate studies. Applicants must select only one of the available research topics and submit a research proposal related to their chosen project.

Eligibility criteria
- Applicants of all nationalities are eligible, including candidates from Arab countries.
- Applicants must apply for a full-time PhD program at Monash University Malaysia.
- Applicants must hold an academic qualification equivalent to First Class Honours (H1), as assessed by Monash University Malaysia.
- Applicants must meet the academic admission requirements of the PhD program.
- Applicants must satisfy the university’s English language requirements.
- Applicants must select only one research topic from the available GEMS projects.
- Applicants must submit a research proposal directly related to their selected topic.
- Applicants must submit a complete application with all required documents.
- Scholarship recipients must be willing to participate in academic or research support activities for up to 240 hours per year.
- Successful applicants must commence their studies within the year the scholarship is awarded and no later than October 15, 2026.
