The Institute for Ideas and Imagination at Columbia University has opened applications for its fellowship programme for the 2027–2028 academic year, one of the funded international fellowships in France that brings together artists, writers, creatives, and researchers in an interdisciplinary environment in Paris.

The fellowship will take place at Reid Hall in Paris from September 1, 2027 to May 31, 2028. The Institute welcomes up to approximately 15 fellows to work on independent projects, exchange ideas, and participate in an intellectual and artistic community that brings together people from diverse disciplines and backgrounds.

Fields

Applicants may come from areas such as:

  • Creative writing.
  • Literature.
  • Visual arts.
  • Filmmaking.
  • Sound arts.
  • Other related creative practices.

Eligibility criteria

  • Affiliation with Columbia University is not required to apply through the Creative Arts track.
  • Applicants from different nationalities around the world are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must work in a field related to the creative arts.
  • For the international track mentioned, applicants must not be residing in the United States at the time of application, regardless of nationality.
  • Applicants must submit a clear project that can be developed during the fellowship period in Paris.
  • Applicants must be able to commit to in-person participation and actively contribute to the fellows’ community.
  • Fellows are expected to limit external professional commitments, such as teaching or extended research travel, so they can participate fully in the life of the Institute.
