The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University in the United States has opened applications for the CASBS Fellowship 2027–2028, an international research fellowship programme that gives distinguished researchers and academics the opportunity to dedicate themselves to research and writing within an interdisciplinary scholarly community at Stanford University.
The fellowship primarily targets researchers in the social and behavioral sciences, including anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, political science, psychology, and sociology. It also welcomes scholars from other disciplines, such as the humanities, education, linguistics, media and communication, health sciences, natural sciences, and computational sciences, provided that their work is connected to human behavior and society.
Benefits
The CASBS Fellowship offers selected fellows a range of benefits, including:
- A financial stipend to help support the researcher’s income during the fellowship year.
- CASBS support may currently reach up to USD 83,000, depending on the researcher’s salary, available funding, and individual circumstances.
- Funding is generally calculated based on the researcher’s previous salary and, under normal circumstances, does not exceed 50% of the base salary, with additional support expected from the home institution or other funding sources.
- Some fellows with lower incomes may receive different support arrangements according to programme policies.
- Housing and relocation support may be available for first-time fellows relocating from outside the area, depending on individual circumstances.
- Official status as a Stanford Fellow.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Applications are open to researchers from countries around the world.
- Hold a PhD degree, a professional degree such as a JD or MD, an equivalent international qualification, or demonstrate a comparable level of professional reputation and achievement.
- Typically, at least 3 to 4 years must have passed since obtaining the PhD or equivalent qualification.
- The fellowship is not a postdoctoral programme for recent graduates.
- Applicants should be academic faculty members or independent scholars with a distinguished record of research and scholarly achievement.
- Have a strong record of publications and research appropriate to their career stage.
- Be able to communicate clearly in English.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in participating in interdisciplinary discussions and collaboration.
- Be willing to reside near CASBS and participate fully in the fellowship community throughout the programme period.
- Researchers from disciplines outside the social and behavioral sciences may apply if their work has clear dimensions related to humans, behavior, or society.
- International researchers must be eligible to obtain a J-1 Scholar visa for the United States.
