Opportunity description
The Poetry Society announces the opening of applications for the National Poetry Competition 2026, one of the world’s leading poetry competitions. It invites poets from around the world to submit an original, unpublished poem in English, not exceeding 40 lines. The competition has been organized since 1978, and entries are judged by a panel of poets and experts in the literary field.
Benefits
- First Prize: GBP 5,000.
- Second Prize: GBP 3,000.
- Third Prize: GBP 2,000.
- Commendation Prizes: GBP 500 for each winner.
Eligibility criteria
- Applications are open to poets from all around the world.
- Applicants must be 18 years old or older at the time of submission.
- The poem must be original and written by the applicant.
- The poem must not have been previously published, including on a website or social media.
- The poem must not exceed 40 lines. Titles, dedications, and blank lines are not counted within the maximum limit.
- The poem must be written in English, with the possibility of including phrases in other languages within the text.
- The use of artificial intelligence to write the poem is not allowed.
- The poet’s name or any identifying information must not appear in the poem text, as judging is conducted anonymously.
Submission Fees
- First poem: GBP 9.
- Each additional poem within the same submission: GBP 6.
- Members of The Poetry Society receive the second poem free when submitting it within the same entry.
- A limited number of free entry places are available for applicants on low incomes.
