ICGEB Postdoctoral Fellowship 2026 with a Monthly Salary, Travel Coverage, and Health Insurance

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is accepting applications for the Arturo Falaschi Postdoctoral Fellowships for outstanding researchers in the fields of life sciences, genetic engineering, and biotechnology.

The fellowship enables researchers to conduct advanced research at one of ICGEB’s international laboratories in Trieste, Italy; New Delhi, India; or Cape Town, South Africa. Fellows work in an international scientific environment equipped with advanced research facilities and supported by experts in areas such as infectious diseases, medical and industrial biotechnology, plant biology, and other related fields.

The application process begins with the submission of an expression of interest and the selection of a suitable laboratory and research supervisor. Candidates who receive approval from a supervisor are then invited to submit a full fellowship application during the second stage.

• A monthly stipend of EUR 2,300 for fellows based in Trieste, Italy.
• A monthly stipend of USD 1,749 for fellows based in New Delhi, India.
• A monthly stipend of ZAR 27,500 for fellows based in Cape Town, South Africa.
• Coverage of travel expenses from the fellow’s home country to the selected ICGEB laboratory at the beginning of the fellowship.
• Coverage of return travel to the fellow’s home country upon completion of the fellowship.
• Health insurance throughout the fellowship period.
• Coverage of research project expenses through the host research group’s budget.
• Reimbursement of visa or residence permit issuance and renewal costs.
• Possible financial support for participation in scientific courses and meetings.
• The opportunity to later apply for ICGEB early-career research grants to establish an independent research programme upon returning to the fellow’s home country.

Applicants must:

1. Be a citizen of an ICGEB member state.
2. Hold a recently awarded PhD in a life sciences discipline or have at least three years of relevant research experience.
3. Apply to conduct research at an ICGEB laboratory located outside their country of citizenship.
4. Applicants may apply to a laboratory in their own country only if they have been working abroad for at least three years at the time of application.
5. Propose a research project aligned with the expertise and research areas of one of ICGEB’s laboratories.
6. Select a suitable research supervisor from among the Centre’s principal investigators.
7. Applicants under the age of 35 are generally given preference, although this is not an absolute eligibility requirement.
8. Have a strong academic and research record. Selection is based on the quality of the proposed project, the applicant’s curriculum vitae, and the expected benefit to the applicant’s home country.
