Opportunity description

The Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, has opened applications for the Independent & Freelance Photojournalist Award – IFPA 2026, an international award aimed at independent and freelance photojournalists from around the world.

The award seeks to recognize excellence in independent photojournalism and support photographers whose work documents important, urgent, or underreported global issues. Participants may submit a 12-image photo essay in one of the competition categories.

The award includes three main categories:

  • Spot News
  • Environment
  • Solutions

One winner is selected in each category, resulting in 3 main winners each year.

Benefits

The total value of the cash prizes is USD 15,000, distributed across the three categories:

  • The winner of the Spot News category receives USD 5,000.
  • The winner of the Environment category receives USD 5,000.
  • The winner of the Solutions category receives USD 5,000.
  • The winners’ work will be exhibited at the Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah.
  • Each winner receives official recognition as the winner of their category.
  • A Runner-Up is selected in each category and receives an official certificate and an online showcase of the selected photo essay.
  • Photographers retain full copyright ownership of their work, while granting Xposure non-exclusive rights to use selected works for promotional purposes related to the award and festival.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Applications are open to individuals of all nationalities.
  • Be an independent or freelance photojournalist and not employed full-time by a media organization.
  • Hold a valid national or international press card issued by a recognized authority, or provide evidence of published journalistic work together with a supporting reference from a recognized media organization.
  • All submitted photographs must be taken by the applicant.
  • All photographs must have been taken within the past 24 months.
  • Each submission must consist of a 12-image photo essay.
  • A photo essay previously submitted to the competition may not be resubmitted in the same form.
  • Images created using artificial intelligence are not permitted.
  • The journalistic integrity of the image must be preserved, and edits that alter the reality or meaning of the scene are not allowed. Only standard adjustments such as exposure, color, contrast, and brightness are permitted.
  • Submitted images must not contain watermarks or the photographer’s name.
