Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is offering a full-time national volunteer opportunity for a Communications Specialist with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) office in Port Sudan.

The selected volunteer will develop and implement communication strategies, produce media and digital content, manage social media platforms, and enhance the visibility of FAO projects related to food security, sustainable agriculture, and livelihoods in Sudan.

Assignment Location and Duration

  1. Duty station: Port Sudan, Sudan.
  2. Working arrangement: On-site at the United Nations office.
  3. Assignment type: National Specialist UN Volunteer.
  4. Working hours: Full-time.
  5. Assignment duration: Six months.
  6. Extension: Possible depending on the organization’s needs.
  7. Expected starting date: August 2, 2026.
  8. Number of positions: One.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the communication strategy of the FAO office in Sudan.
  • Produce articles, project summaries, media materials, and social media content.
  • Monitor media coverage of the organization’s activities and prepare related reports.
  • Draft press releases, talking points, and materials for media interviews.
  • Manage FAO Sudan’s social media accounts.
  • Develop digital content and adapt it into Arabic.
  • Coordinate media coverage of events, conferences, and field activities.
  • Build relationships with national and international media outlets.
  • Produce and collect high-quality photographs and videos and submit them to FAO databases.
  • Coordinate with regional communication teams and United Nations headquarters.
  • Support international campaigns such as World Food Day.
  • Ensure that all materials comply with FAO communication policies, branding, and standards.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a Sudanese national, a legal resident of Sudan, or hold refugee status in the country.
  2. Be between 18 and 60 years old.
  3. Hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, media relations, or a related field.
  4. Have at least three years of relevant professional experience, according to the general registration criteria.
  5. The assignment requirements indicate that up to five years of relevant experience may be preferred or required.
  6. Be fluent in English.
  7. Fluency in Arabic is considered desirable.
  8. Have experience in communications, advocacy, media, and public information.
  9. Be able to work in difficult and rapidly changing conditions.
  10. Possess strong planning, organizational, creative, and decision-making skills.
