Opportunity description

The Hastings Book Festival announces its annual online competition, offering winners the chance to win a £250 prize.

Benefits

  1. The first-place winner will receive £250.
  2. The second-place winner will receive £100.
  3. The third-place winner will receive £50.
  • The winning entries will be published on the Hastings Book Festival website.
  • The festival offers two prizes: one for short stories and one for poetry.
  • The winners of the short stories and poetry prizes will receive a two-night independent writing trip to a Sussex-themed cottage! The Sussex prize winners will also receive mentoring from local writers V. J. Lee (short stories) and John McCullough (poetry).







Eligibility criteria

  • Entrants to all competitions must be at least 18 years old at the time of entry.
  • This competition is open to everyone, including writers not resident in the UK.
  • There are no geographical restrictions on entries.
  • The deadline for all entries is 10 pm on 30 June 2025. Late entries will not be judged.
  • A full list of winners will be published on the website shortly before the Hastings Book Festival in September.
  • By entering the competition, you confirm your agreement to all rules and conditions.
  • Judging will be confidential, and all judges' decisions are final.
  • The maximum word limit for the main Hastings Book Festival and Sussex Short Story Prize competitions is 2,500 words for a story.
  • The maximum line limit for the main Hastings Book Festival and Sussex Poetry Prize competitions is 40 lines for a poem.
  • The maximum word limit for the Founder's Award for Creative Non-Fiction is 1,000 words on the theme of "Reflections."
  • Entries exceeding the allowed word count will not be judged.
  • All entries must be written in English.
  • Please remove all identifying information, such as name and email address, from your document and file name.
  • Please format your document in Arial or Times New Roman, size 12. For fiction, please double-space.
  • Entries will only be accepted in Microsoft Word-compatible .docx formats. Please do not upload PDFs, Apple Pages, or any other format, as entries in other formats will not be evaluated.
  • Please double-check your document before uploading. No post-submission edits will be permitted.
  • You may submit as many stories and poems as you wish. You can upload up to three stories and poems at a time (see entry fees here).
  • Please place all entries in a single .docx file, with each entry starting on a new page with its own title.
  • The entry fee for one entry is £8.25, for two entries: £15, and for three entries: £21. (The maximum number of entries for creative non-fiction works is one.)
  • The maximum number of entries per transaction is three, but you can submit more by completing another entry form and repeating the process.

The first festival took place in August 2018, and has now become a regular and welcomed event on the local calendar.
