Sony Global Short Film Competition 2027 with Cash Prizes

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 invite independent filmmakers, students, and creative professionals from around the world to submit their short films across six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, Immersive, Student, and Future Format.

The competition is considered one of the leading international awards for emerging filmmakers. It gives participants the opportunity to present their work to prominent experts from the film industry. Selected filmmakers receive a funded trip to Los Angeles to take part in a professional development program at Sony Pictures Studios. Winners also compete for cash prizes, Sony digital imaging equipment, and Meta virtual reality headsets.

Participation is free and open to filmmakers of all nationalities.

Competition Categories and Prizes

1. Fiction

This category accepts films that present an original fictional story or event through a narrative format.

• Film duration: 5 to 20 minutes.
• Up to 10 films may be shortlisted.
• Cash prize: USD 5,000.
• Sony digital imaging equipment.
• A Meta virtual reality headset.

2. Non-Fiction

This category accepts films based on real-life subjects, including documentaries, archival material, reenactments, and selected animation techniques.

• Film duration: 5 to 20 minutes.
• Up to 10 films may be shortlisted.
• Cash prize: USD 5,000.
• Sony digital imaging equipment.
• A Meta virtual reality headset.

3. Animation

This category accepts films created using different animation techniques, including stop-motion, computer-generated animation, motion graphics, rotoscoping, and experimental methods.

• Film duration: 2 to 20 minutes.
• At least 75% of the film must consist of animated content.
• Up to five films may be shortlisted.
• Cash prize: USD 5,000.
• Sony digital imaging equipment.
• A Meta virtual reality headset.

4. Immersive

This new category, presented in partnership with Meta, supports films that use immersive video technologies to place viewers inside the story.

• Film duration: 5 to 20 minutes.
• Films may be fictional, documentary, live-action, or animated.
• Submissions must comply with the technical specifications listed on the official entry page, which currently focus on the VR180 format.
• Up to two films may be shortlisted.
• Cash prize: USD 5,000.
• A Meta virtual reality headset.

5. Student

This category is open to students studying filmmaking at a registered educational institution as part of a diploma or degree program.

• Films from all genres are accepted.
• Film duration: 5 to 20 minutes.
• Up to five films may be shortlisted.
• The winner receives Sony digital imaging equipment and a Meta virtual reality headset.
• The winner’s educational institution also receives Sony digital imaging equipment.
• The official competition page does not list a cash prize for this category.

6. Future Format

This category invites filmmakers to create a short film specifically designed for vertical viewing in a 9:16 aspect ratio.

• Film duration: 2 to 5 minutes, including end credits.
• Films may be recorded using any device.
• Submissions may belong to any film genre.
• The film must not be a repurposed version of a horizontally formatted production.
• Traditional social media content, such as vlogs or trend-based videos, is not accepted.
• Advertisements, promotional videos, and branded or sponsored content are not eligible.
• Cash prize: USD 2,500.
• Sony digital imaging equipment.
• The winner receives an invitation to attend the professional development program in Los Angeles.
• One winner and up to four or five commended entries may be selected, depending on the wording published across the competition’s official pages.

Shortlisted filmmakers will receive:

• Funded round-trip travel and accommodation to participate in the professional development program in Los Angeles.
• Access to a four-day training program held at Sony Pictures Studios.
• Participation in workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, and film screenings.
• Insight into both the creative and commercial aspects of the filmmaking industry.
• Networking opportunities with Sony Pictures executives, industry experts, and filmmakers from around the world.
• Attendance at the red-carpet awards ceremony.
• A certificate of participation.
• The opportunity to win cash prizes, Sony digital imaging equipment, and Meta virtual reality headsets.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Applicants of all nationalities are eligible, including candidates from Arab countries.
• Applicants must be independent filmmakers, except for the Student category, which requires enrollment in a recognized filmmaking program.
• Applicants must hold full intellectual property rights to the submitted film.
• The film must have been released or produced between January 1, 2025, and December 15, 2026.
• Each applicant may submit only one film per category.
• The film must comply with the duration requirements of the selected category.
• Films must be in English or include English subtitles.
• Films may be recorded using any type of camera or device.
• The submitted work must not have been previously entered in the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards unless it has undergone substantial changes.
• Applicants must comply with all technical requirements of the selected category.

Submission Requirements

Applicants should prepare the following before submitting their entry:

• An active link to the film on an online viewing platform such as YouTube or Vimeo.
• A brief description of the film.
• A JPEG image representing the project.
• The image file must be between 1 MB and 5 MB.
• The image must use the sRGB color profile.
• The film link must remain active until July 31, 2027.
• The film must be submitted in suitable viewing quality and comply with the technical specifications of the selected category.
• For the Immersive category, applicants must provide a direct download link to the film file in accordance with the published technical instructions.
