Opportunity description

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, has opened applications for the Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowships, an international research fellowship programme designed for experienced academics and researchers with a strong international academic reputation.

The fellowship gives researchers the opportunity to reside at the European University Institute and work on their research projects within an international academic environment, while participating in seminars, workshops, and scholarly activities organized by the Institute’s departments. Fellows can also engage with researchers, PhD and postdoctoral scholars, and faculty members. Depending on the department and available funding, the fellowship may last for up to 10 months.

For the September 30, 2026 deadline, applications are being accepted by the following departments:

  • Department of Economics for fellowships taking place between September 2027 and June 2028.
  • Department of History, which welcomes researchers who have made a significant contribution to the field of history, covering topics and periods from 1400 to the present.
  • Department of Political and Social Sciences.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an experienced researcher or academic with an international academic reputation.
  • Applications are open to candidates of all nationalities.
  • Have a strong academic and research record appropriate for the senior level of the fellowship.
  • The proposed research project must be relevant to one of the departments accepting applications in the current cycle.
  • For the Department of History, applicants are expected to have made a significant academic contribution to the field of history.
  • The Department of Political and Social Sciences may also consider applications from exceptional researchers at a relatively early stage of their academic careers.
  • Applicants must have a good command of English and any other language necessary to carry out the proposed research.
  • Former EUI professors or fellows may reapply provided that at least 3 years have passed since the end of their most recent contract with the Institute.
