The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg in Germany has opened applications for the FRIAS Senior Fellowship Programme 2027/2028, a research fellowship designed for experienced researchers from all nationalities and academic disciplines.
The fellowship gives researchers the opportunity to work independently on their research projects within an international academic environment at the University of Freiburg, while benefiting from the university’s resources, research networks, and opportunities to collaborate with scholars from diverse disciplines and backgrounds.
Benefits
Successful applicants receive a range of benefits, with some details depending on the researcher’s employment status, including:
- A research fellowship at the University of Freiburg in Germany for a period of 3 to 8 months.
- Researchers who are not employed under a contract with another institution may receive a salary at 100% of the W2 level, provided they do not receive other income during the fellowship period.
- Researchers who remain employed by their home institutions may receive a mobility and accommodation allowance to cover additional costs related to staying in Freiburg.
- Possible reimbursement of costs for providing a teaching replacement during the fellowship period, subject to the programme’s conditions.

Eligibility criteria
To apply for the FRIAS Senior Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a PhD degree.
- Have at least 8 years of research experience after obtaining the PhD.
- Have a strong academic record, including at least 10 peer-reviewed publications since January 1, 2020.
- Have at least 6 months of research or study experience at an academic institution in a country different from the country where the applicant obtained their first academic degree.
- Applicants from all nationalities and countries worldwide are eligible, including researchers currently based in Germany.
- Applicants from all academic disciplines may apply, provided that the proposed research project can be supported at the University of Freiburg.
- The proposed research project must be of high academic quality, innovative, and feasible within the fellowship period.
- Researchers in experimental fields must identify a host laboratory in Freiburg and obtain a letter of support from it before submitting the application.
- Applicants must strictly follow all document requirements and specified length limits, as late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
