The Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) in Cairo, in collaboration with the Orient-Institut Beirut (OIB), has opened a call for research papers for the international conference “The Composition of the Qur’an: Structure, Style & Meaning”, which will be held in Cairo on March 19–20, 2027.
The conference focuses on examining the structure, style, rhetoric, organization, and meaning-making processes of the Qur’anic text. It aims to bring together approaches rooted in the Islamic scholarly tradition—such as Qur’anic exegesis, rhetoric, Qur’anic sciences, theories of textual composition, and the study of thematic and structural relationships—with contemporary academic approaches in literary, philological, historical, manuscript, and comparative studies.
Researchers may submit papers addressing a range of topics, including:
- Literary structure and rhetorical analysis of the Qur’anic text.
- Coherence and connections between surahs and verses.
- Repetition, rhythm, sound, and language and their role in constructing meaning.
- The textual formation of the Qur’an and its historical context.
- Manuscripts and philological evidence and their role in the study of the text.
- Exegesis and self-reference within the Qur’an.
- The relationship between traditional Islamic approaches and modern academic methodologies.
- Oral, performative, and ritual contexts of Qur’anic recitation.

- Papers considered for publication will undergo double-blind peer review.
Eligibility criteria
Applications are open to researchers and academics interested in Qur’anic and Islamic studies and other research fields related to the conference theme.
The organizers have not announced any specific nationality restrictions, so researchers from different countries may submit proposals, provided they meet the application requirements.
Applicants must:
- Submit a paper that aligns with the conference theme or one of its research tracks.
- Submit an original and unpublished paper for participation in the conference.
- Provide a research abstract of between 300 and 500 words.
- Submit the abstract in PDF format.
- Attach a brief CV of no more than one page.
- Include the researcher’s academic or institutional affiliation and recent publications in the CV.
- Commit to presenting the paper at the conference if accepted.
- Commit to submitting the paper to MIDEO.
- Be able to participate in English, as English is the primary language of the conference.
