The University of Sydney in Australia has opened applications for the Henry Bertie and Florence Mabel Gritton Research Scholarships, a research scholarship designed for PhD students who wish to conduct research in chemistry related to industry and agriculture.
Established in 1957, the scholarship aims to support and advance knowledge and research in chemistry and its practical applications, including chemistry related to electrical engineering, metallurgical chemistry, mining, mineral processing, natural resources, and agricultural products.
Benefits
The selected student will receive:
- An annual living allowance equivalent to the University of Sydney’s Research Training Program (RTP) stipend rate.
- The RTP stipend is AUD 42,754 per year for 2026, increasing to AUD 44,293 per year for 2027.
- Funding for up to 14 research periods, approximately 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.
- A relocation allowance of up to AUD 1,485 in total for eligible students relocating to their place of study.
- A possible thesis-related allowance of up to AUD 840 to support the preparation and submission of the PhD thesis.
- Paid annual and sick leave in accordance with the scholarship conditions.
- Eligibility for paid parental leave after meeting the required period of study.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be either a domestic or international student.
- Hold an unconditional offer of admission or be enrolled full-time in a PhD program at the University of Sydney.
- Applicants who have not yet received an unconditional offer may still apply for the scholarship; however, a final scholarship offer will not be issued until unconditional admission has been obtained.
- Be willing to undertake research in chemistry related to industry and agriculture.
- The research area may include:
- Chemistry related to electrical engineering.
- Metallurgical chemistry.
- Applications of chemistry in mining.
- Mineral extraction and processing.
- Natural products and resources related to soil and agriculture.
- Hold a First-Class Honours or Upper Second-Class Honours degree, or
- Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field with a substantial research component, or an equivalent qualification.
