Opportunity description

The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) in the United States has opened applications for the Conservation Guest Scholars Program 2027–2028, one of its funded international fellowship programmes for experienced researchers and professionals working in the field of cultural heritage conservation and preservation.

The programme gives selected participants the opportunity to spend 3 months at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, where they can work independently on a research project that contributes new knowledge or approaches to the field of conservation, away from their regular professional responsibilities.

During the fellowship, participants can benefit from the research collections and resources available at the Getty Center and Getty Villa, while also taking part in academic activities and engaging with Getty researchers, fellows, and interns.

Benefits

Selected participants receive:

  • A financial grant of USD 21,500 for the 3-month research residency.
  • Apartment accommodation within Getty’s housing complex for scholars.
  • A travel allowance.
  • Office and workspace at the Getty Conservation Institute.
  • Research support and assistance.
  • Access to a healthcare option, subject to programme conditions.
  • Access to Getty’s collections, libraries, and research resources.
  • Opportunities to interact and collaborate with international researchers and experts in cultural heritage conservation.
  • Participation in Getty’s academic and research community alongside other scholars and fellows.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants from all nationalities are eligible.
  • Applicants must be researchers or practitioners working in the field of cultural heritage conservation or preservation.
  • Relevant areas may include objects and artifacts, collections, architecture, and heritage sites.
  • Have at least 7 years of professional experience in the field.
  • Have a proven professional and academic record, including publications or significant contributions to cultural heritage conservation.

  • Current Getty employees and members of their immediate families are not eligible to apply.
