The University of Tokyo in Japan has opened applications for the International Multidisciplinary Engineering Graduate Program – IME 2027, an international graduate programme that allows non-Japanese students to pursue a two-year Master’s degree in Engineering or a three-year PhD in Engineering in English.
This opportunity is considered one of the funded Master’s and PhD opportunities in Japan, as top applicants in the September 2026 application round are automatically considered for scholarships available through the programme. These include the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, scholarships funded by the University of Tokyo, and scholarships provided by the School of Engineering.
Under the MEXT Scholarship, Master’s students receive a monthly stipend of JPY 144,000, while PhD students receive JPY 145,000 per month, in addition to an extra monthly allowance currently ranging from JPY 2,000 to JPY 3,000, depending on the research location. MEXT recipients are also exempt from admission fees and tuition fees throughout the programme.

Selected students receive:
- JPY 144,000 per month for Master’s students.
- JPY 145,000 per month for PhD students.
- An additional monthly allowance depending on the research location:
- JPY 3,000 for locations such as Hongo, Komaba, and Sagamihara.
- JPY 2,000 for Kashiwa.
- Full exemption from the admission fee.
- Full tuition fee exemption throughout the study period.
- Reimbursement of the JPY 10,000 application examination fee after enrollment for MEXT recipients.
Eligibility criteria
General Requirements
Applicants must:
- Not hold Japanese nationality.
- Not be residing in Japan during the application period through the T-cens system, except for limited cases involving certain short-term exchange students.
- Have an adequate level of English to attend lectures and conduct research in English.
- Meet the academic degree requirements for the programme.
- Select one or more prospective supervisors at the University of Tokyo whose research fields align with the applicant’s interests.
For Master’s Applicants
Applicants are generally required to:
- Have completed, or expect to complete, 16 years of education outside Japan before the programme begins.
Or:
- Hold, or expect to obtain, a qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from a higher education institution outside Japan, in accordance with the university’s academic requirements.
Alternative eligibility pathways are also available for some applicants with different qualifications and are assessed individually.
For PhD Applicants
Applicants are generally required to:
- Hold, or expect to obtain, a Master’s degree, professional degree, or equivalent academic qualification outside Japan before the programme begins.
