Opportunity description
The Stanford Humanities Center at Stanford University in the United States has opened applications for the External Faculty Fellowships 2027–2028, a funded international research fellowship programme primarily designed for researchers and academics who are employed by or affiliated with academic institutions, while independent scholars may also apply.
The fellowship gives researchers the opportunity to dedicate a full academic year to their research projects within Stanford University’s international academic environment and to participate in a scholarly community that brings together researchers from diverse institutions, backgrounds, and disciplines. Fellowships are awarded to scholars at different academic ranks, including assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors.
The programme supports research in traditional and emerging humanities fields as well as interpretive social sciences. It also welcomes digital humanities projects, while projects focused primarily on creative arts practice are not eligible.
Benefits
The fellowship provides selected fellows with:
- A financial stipend of up to USD 70,000 for the fellowship year.
- A housing and relocation allowance of up to USD 30,000.
- A research residency for a full academic year at Stanford University.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Applications are open to researchers of all nationalities, with no U.S. citizenship requirement.
- Applicants must hold a PhD degree.
- At least 3 years must have passed since the PhD was awarded by the beginning of the fellowship year.
- Fellowships are classified as:
- Junior Fellowships: for researchers who received their PhD between 3 and 10 years ago.
- Senior Fellowships: for researchers who received their PhD more than 10 years ago.
- Applicants from a wide range of humanities and interpretive social science disciplines are eligible.
- Projects in Digital Humanities are also eligible.
- Purely creative arts projects are not eligible.
- Independent scholars may apply, as well as faculty members and researchers affiliated with academic institutions.
- Previous recipients of the Stanford Humanities Center External Faculty Fellowship are not eligible to reapply.
