Opportunity description
The School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton is accepting applications for research membership for the 2027–2028 academic year.
The opportunity is intended for experienced scholars with strong academic records across a wide range of historical and humanities disciplines. It allows selected researchers to dedicate themselves fully to developing an independent research project within one of the world’s leading research institutions.
The School supports research in ancient, medieval, and modern history, the Islamic world, art history, the history of science, philosophy, music, literature, and international relations, as well as interdisciplinary historical research.
Researchers may apply for either one academic term or the full academic year. During the membership period, they must reside at the Institute for Advanced Study or in the nearby Princeton area.
Applications are open to scholars of all nationalities, and applicants are not required to be currently affiliated with a university or academic institution.

- Limited reimbursement of travel expenses for researchers coming from outside the Princeton area.
- Travel reimbursement of up to USD 2,000 may be available for researchers traveling from outside the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This amount may be doubled when accompanying family members.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent academic qualification by July 31, 2026.
- Have a strong record of scholarly research and academic publications.
- Propose a research project within historical studies, the humanities, or a closely related field.
- Be able to reside at the Institute for Advanced Study or in the nearby Princeton area throughout the membership period.
- Commit to pursuing the proposed research project on a full-time basis during the fellowship.
- Applicants are not required to be currently employed by or affiliated with an academic institution.
- Applications are open to qualified scholars of all nationalities.
