National Gallery of Art Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027 with an Annual Stipend of USD 55,000

The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is accepting applications for the A. W. Mellon and Beinecke Postdoctoral Fellowships for the period from September 2027 through August 2029.

The fellowships are intended for scholars who have recently earned a doctoral degree and whose research focuses on the history, theory, or criticism of the visual arts. Proposed research projects may address any historical period or geographical region, giving applicants considerable freedom in selecting their research topics and methodologies.

Each fellowship lasts for two years and provides fellows with the opportunity to develop their research projects in a specialized academic environment. Fellows also gain access to the National Gallery of Art’s collections, library, and research resources, while participating in the lectures, seminars, and scholarly activities organized by the Center.

• An annual stipend of USD 55,000 for each academic year.
• An allowance to help cover health insurance premiums.
• A relocation allowance for moving to Washington, D.C.
• A travel allowance related to the fellowship and research activities.
• A dedicated office within the East Building of the National Gallery of Art.
• Possible access to housing, subject to availability.
• Access to the National Gallery of Art’s library, collections, and research resources.
• Participation in lectures, seminars, and scholarly discussions organized by the Center.
• The opportunity to design and lead an intensive seminar for predoctoral fellows during the first year.
• The opportunity to teach a course at a nearby university during the second year.
• The chance to build a professional network with scholars, academics, art historians, and specialists in visual studies.

Applicants must:

1. Have earned a doctoral degree between October 15, 2021, and October 15, 2026.
2. Propose a research project in one of the following areas:
   • History of the visual arts.
   • Art theory.
   • Art criticism.
   • Visual studies or another closely related field.
3. The proposed research may focus on any historical period or geographical region.
4. Not currently be affiliated with the National Gallery of Art.
5. Not apply simultaneously for another fellowship offered by the Center while the application is under review.
6. Be able to reside in Washington, D.C., and participate fully in the fellowship’s activities.
7. Applicants of all ages and nationalities are eligible to apply.
