National Gallery of Art Senior Visiting Fellowship 2027 with Funding of up to USD 12,500

The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is accepting applications for its 2027 Senior Visiting Research Fellowship Program. These short-term research fellowships are intended for experienced scholars specializing in the history, theory, or criticism of the visual arts.

Selected fellows will undertake a two-month, full-time research residency at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. During the fellowship, they can develop their research projects and access the National Gallery of Art’s library, art collections, and academic resources. Fellows will also participate in lectures, seminars, and scholarly discussions organized by the Center.

• A two-month, full-time research residency in Washington, D.C.
• Paul Mellon and Beinecke Fellows receive funding of:
  • USD 7,000, or
  • USD 8,000, depending on relocation and accommodation requirements.
• Leonard A. Lauder Fellows receive funding of up to USD 12,500.
• The Leonard A. Lauder Fellowship funding includes an additional USD 2,500 to support future research and publications.
• A dedicated office within the East Building of the National Gallery of Art.
• Housing may be provided, subject to availability.
• Access to the National Gallery of Art’s library, art collections, and research resources.
• Access to research and cultural resources throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area.
• Participation in lectures, seminars, and scholarly discussions with the Center’s research community.
• The opportunity to develop an independent research project within a prestigious artistic and academic institution.

Applicants must:

1. Have earned a doctoral degree at least five years before the application deadline.
2. Alternatively, possess a professional and research record equivalent to a doctoral degree and the required level of academic experience.
3. Propose a research project related to one or more of the following areas:
   • History of the visual arts.
   • Art theory.
   • Art criticism.
   • Visual culture.
   • The study of artworks or material objects.
4. The proposed project may address any historical period or geographical region.
5. Scholars from different academic disciplines may apply, provided that their research is relevant to the analysis, interpretation, or criticism of art or visual culture.
6. Not currently be affiliated with the National Gallery of Art.
7. Not apply for another fellowship offered by the Center while their application is under review or after receiving one of the Center’s fellowships.
8. Former fellows may reapply after three years have passed since the completion of their previous fellowship.
