PyeongChang Youth Peace Challenge (YPC) 2022 is now available for participants all over the world. The challenge consists of an essay contest and group debate. Those participants selected from the essay contest will be invited to join the group debate online.

Essay Theme:-

The Essay must have the following theme: How to implement the proposals contained in the Common Agenda report of the UN Secretary General from a peace perspective as a youth in your country and/or internationally.

Benefits

  • Grand Prize: KRW 2,000,000 (approx. USD 1,800)(1 individual/team).
  • First Prize: KRW 1,500,000 (approx. USD 1,350)(2 individuals/teams).
  • Second Prize: KRW 1,000,000 (approx. USD 900)(3 individuals/teams).
  • Third Prize: KRW 500,000 (approx. USD 450)(4 individuals/teams).

Eligibility criteria

  • The formal language of the challenge (essay and debate) is English.
  • You can participate individually or as a part of a team of maximum 2 persons of any nationalities.
  • You must be aged between 15 and 27 (born between 1 Jan. 1994 and 31 Dec. 2006).

Guidelines:-

  • Guidelines for the essay
  • The length of the essay must be between 3,000 and 4,000 words.
  • Guiding Questions for Essay Writing:
  • What made you join the YPC 2022? (300 to 400 words)
  • Why does the Common Agenda (OCA) report matter to you as a youth? (300 to 400 words)
  • Please identify the issues and proposals that are relevant and important for you in terms of peacebuilding as a youth, and describe what kinds of activities you have engaged so far? (1,000 to 1,200 words)
  • What do you think youths can do more and better to promote peace with the OCA report and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Korea and/or internationally? (450 to 600 words)
  • What do you think are the major challenges and difficulties in implementing the proposals in the OCA report (450 to 600 words)?
  • What would you like to propose to your government (local and/or national), the UN and other stakeholders to promote peace with the OCA report and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Korea and/or internationally? (500 to 800 words).
  • Guidelines for the Group Debate
  • Duration for the group debate: 100 minutes
  • Number of Participants is between 5-7 teams per group debate
  • Participants will be divided into 2 or 3 age clusters for group debate
  • Group debate is composed of two stages: The first round is about the contents of the essay and the second (final) round is about a common topic related to the theme of the YPC 2022
  • Structure of the group debate: Introduction by the moderator (2 minutes), opening statement (5 minutes per each team), Q and A among participants, Q and A with the panel of judges, and closing statement (3 minutes per each team)
  • The theme for the final round of the group debate (15 Feb. 2022) will be announced on 20 January 2022

Judging Criteria:-

  • Contents: Are the ideas and messages creative, substantive, ambitious, thoroughly developed, and relevant to the theme and guiding questions?
  • Organization: Are the statements and arguments evidence-based, clearly stated, logically sequenced, cohesive and well-supported?
  • Vocabulary: Are vocabulary relevantly and effectively chosen and used in an appropriate manner?
  • Others : grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, paragraphing, etc.

PyeongChang Youth Peace Challenge (YPC) is a peace and global citizenship education program in the form of an essay and group debate for youths who are interested in engaging with peace-building and peace-making in the context of the UN Decade of Action to Deliver the SDGs by 2030. The YPC aims at empowering youths with learning opportunities to share their experiences and ideas about how to promote and build peace in their daily lives, communities, and society in their country as well as internationally in accordance with the PyeongChang Peace Spirit born out of the historical PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.
