Fellowship in New York for Researchers and Writers Worth USD 90,000

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has opened applications for the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center Fellowship 2027–2028, an international fellowship program for scholars, writers, and creatives whose projects would directly benefit from the extensive research collections housed at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building in New York City.

The program selects 15 fellows each year to spend nine months at the Cullman Center, where participants can focus on research, writing, and developing their projects while engaging with an interdisciplinary community of scholars, writers, and creatives.

The 2027–2028 fellowship runs from September 7, 2027, to May 26, 2028, and each selected fellow receives a stipend of USD 90,000 for the duration of the fellowship.

Eligible Applicants

The fellowship welcomes applications from:

• Academics and researchers.
• Independent scholars.
• Journalists.
• Creative writers.
• Novelists.
• Poets.
• Playwrights.
• Translators.
• Visual artists working on projects that require extensive use of the Library’s collections.

Each selected fellow receives:

• A stipend of USD 90,000.
• A 9-month research residency in New York City.
• A private office at the Cullman Center.
• A computer for use during the fellowship period.
• Full access to the New York Public Library’s physical and electronic research collections.
• A dedicated environment for research, writing, and focused project development.
• The opportunity to engage with 14 other fellows from diverse disciplines and backgrounds.
• Participation in an interdisciplinary academic and creative community.
• Opportunities to take part in discussions and public events organized by the Library.

Applicants must:

• Be a researcher, academic, writer, journalist, translator, independent scholar, or visual artist within one of the eligible categories.
• Submit a high-quality research, writing, or creative project.
• Ensure that the project relies directly on the collections of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.
• Be able to communicate in English.
• Submit all application materials in English.
• Commit to working at the Cullman Center five days a week, Monday through Friday.
• Work primarily from the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building throughout the fellowship period.
• Make the fellowship their primary professional commitment during the nine-month program.
