Opportunity description

The Tamkeen Initiative invites female researchers studying master’s and Ph.D. degrees to participate in the Tamkeen Award for Academic Writing and submit their theses and academic work. This is an annual award supervised by the Book Publishing Program at Tamkeen. It aims to encourage female academics and creative writers, introduce them to the academic community, and provide them with the necessary support to embark on their research journey and overcome the obstacle of publishing a university thesis to begin their professional academic careers. It also aims to provide a specialized social network to support emerging researchers and writers.

Award topics and themes:

Female researchers whose theses are specialized in one of the following topics can apply for the award:

  • Historical axis:
  1. The role of Palestinian women in the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian national liberation movement
  2. The transformations of the role of women's fighting in the struggle
  3. Family history of Palestinian women
  4. The role of women in writing Palestinian history
  5. Palestinian Women Archive: Where?
  6. Oral history and the pivotal role of women in it
  • The socio-political axis
  1. Women in national and party charters and constitutions
  2. Women in Palestinian parties and factions
  3. Women in Palestinian Civil Society (Associations, Syndicates, Federations)
  4. Concepts and problematic issues about women's political participation.
  • Socio-environmental axis
  1. Women in the Palestinian Workforce
  2. Women and the division of social labor
  3. Women and the Palestinian National Heritage: Subject and Object
  4. Women in different art forms
  • Legal axis
  1. Women in the Palestinian internal constitution
  2. Women and the professions of justice
  3. Women, custody, and guardianship issues
  4. Women and the problems of inheritance and alimony
  5. Violence against Woman
  • Critical philosophical axis

Benefits

This award is given to two female researchers annually; a master's degree researcher and another for a Ph.D. researcher. Each winner will receive $1,000 in addition to printing her academic work through one of Tamkeen's friendly publishing and distribution houses. The two winners also receive moral gifts, including the researcher's trophy and a fellowship in one of the research institutions partnering with the Tamkeen Foundation.

Eligibility criteria

  • The nominated work must be academic (Masters or Ph.D. thesis)
  • Academic work must fall under the discipline of social sciences or humanities.
  • The work must have been discussed and the required amendments made by the jury and approved by the university prior to submitting the application.
  • The work should not have been previously published as a complete work and but it is okay to publish parts of it as articles or studies in refereed journals.
  • It is okay if the work has not been submitted for nomination for other awards before, but the researcher must mention this in the award application.

About Tamkeen Initiative:

It is a women’s youth initiative that supports and empowers Palestinian women in all the scientific, social, legal, and practical fields by providing support and development to enhance their professional and social lives through the social network developed by the Initiative to connect different women's competencies and opportunities. The initiative is led by a team of young women who always believe in the existence of alternatives through which they can achieve the renaissance of their society and preserve sustainable development by enhancing the role of human beings. They also believe that society is the perfect place to solve the problems it suffers. In this sense, they believe in empowering women because they are part of society.
